Outread is an app for iPhone which trains your eyes to read content faster, by learning to eliminate your interior voice. Outread trains you to rely less on subvocalization (reading out loud inside your head), and it's not as difficult as it seems! The app uses yellow highlights to guide your eyes along the article to quickly move through the text. Outread combines Rapid Serial Visual Presentation with traditional textual structure, a trick that means the full body of the text is always visible so that you don't lose sight of the text structure.
It trains you to rely less on subvocalization (reading out loud inside your head), and it's not as difficult as it seems
You can manually add articles or select from a website. Some criticism has arisen because Outread does supports neither Microsoft Word documents nor PDF files. However, there is a a way around this by copying the content of these documents and importing it using the clipboard. Some users have lamented the lack of a Statistics module in order to visualize their reading speed learning improvement, nor is there any compatibility with right-to-left written languages at present.
How does it work?
Reading articles in Outread is just as simple as copying the URL and pasting it in to the app. The main page displays the articles you downloaded in full screen view, removing advertisements and toolbars, to create a reading environment free from distraction. Text will automatically scroll down; you can pause it whenever you want just by tapping on the screen. Similarly, you can save articles locally to read offline. Finding articles again later won’t be difficult, as Outread has search filters (title, date published or article length) and categories for organizing them.
Generally, the average reading speed is around two hundred words per minute. Outread can support you in reading up to one thousand words per minute, with a marking average size of one hundred characters. However, this is customizable. Just go to Settings and feel free to adjust Reading Speed and Marker Size according to your preferences. Text size and fonts can be changed too, but not the highlighter color. Note that if you choose the dark theme, it will take you longer to find the highlighted terms.
